Learning Support & ASD Provision
At St. Fergal’s College, we are committed to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to reach their full potential. Our Special Educational Needs (SEN) Department and our ASD Department work to identify and support students with a wide range of additional educational needs.
Learning Support
We offer a range of supports based on the Continuum of Support model to help students who may need additional help with learning. These supports include:
- In-class support and team teaching
- Small-group or one-to-one support (as appropriate)
- Literacy and numeracy intervention
- Assistive technology guidance
- Study skills and organisation support
Students are identified for support through primary school transfer data, assessments, teacher observations, parent input, and professional reports.
ASD Classes
Our ASD Classes provide a structured, supportive setting for students with a diagnosis of Autism who benefit from smaller learning environments alongside inclusive opportunities in mainstream classes.
Key features include:
- Small class size with specialised teaching
- Access to sensory and quiet spaces
- Individual support plans
- Supported transitions to mainstream subjects
- A focus on communication, independence, and well-being
Admission to the ASD Classes follows DES guidelines and the school’s Admissions Policy.
Working With Parents
We value strong communication with families. Parents are encouraged to engage with the SEN and ASD team through:
- Regular meetings
- Review of support plans
- Updates on progress and planning
State Exams: RACE Supports
We assist eligible students in applying for Reasonable Accommodations (RACE) for State Exams, such as access to a scribe, laptop, separate centre, or spelling/grammar waivers.
Our goal is to provide each student with the care, encouragement, and resources they need to thrive, while also fostering a school environment built on inclusion, respect, and understanding.
