Transition Year – 1 Year
The Transition Year (TY) programme at St. Fergal’s College is designed in line with the Department of Education’s new guidelines to provide a structured yet flexible learning experience. Its aim is to support students in developing personal, social, and academic maturity while equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and values they need for Senior Cycle and life beyond school.
TY acts as a vital bridge between Junior Cycle and Senior Cycle. It gives students the opportunity to deepen their learning in core subjects, while also engaging in a variety of new modules and experiences that broaden their horizons. A central feature of the programme is work experience, which takes place one day each week and helps students explore future career pathways in a practical setting.
As the year is free from formal state examinations, TY allows students to focus on self-directed learning, creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork. Our school places great importance on fostering resilience, adaptability, and self-confidence in a safe, supportive environment where students are encouraged to take on challenges and discover new strengths.
Benefits of Transition Year:
- Encourages personal and social development, helping students mature as individuals.
- Provides a well-rounded education, balancing core subjects with a diverse range of modules, projects, and activities.
- Offers opportunities to gain additional qualifications and certifications outside the traditional curriculum.
- Strengthens student contribution to both school life and the wider community through volunteering, projects, and outreach.
- Prepares students for the demands of Senior Cycle and for active participation in society and the world of work.
Transition Year at St. Fergal’s College is much more than a break from examinations. It is a unique opportunity for students to grow as individuals, develop key life skills, and build the confidence needed to take the next steps in their education and future.
