Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA)
The Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) is a two-year Senior Cycle programme offered at St. Fergal’s College. It is designed to prepare students for adult and working life by combining practical, vocational, and academic learning. The programme places a strong emphasis on the development of skills for work and life, while also nurturing personal growth and confidence.
The LCA programme is made up of a range of courses that are structured around practical learning, active participation, and continuous assessment. Students complete a mix of general education, vocational education, and practical work experience, ensuring a well-rounded approach that is both engaging and relevant. Work experience is a key element, giving students the opportunity to explore future career options and gain hands-on skills in real-world settings.
Assessment in LCA
Unlike the traditional Leaving Certificate, assessment in LCA is continuous and student-centred. Students earn credits through:
- Completion of modules in each subject area
- Practical coursework and key assignments
- Work experience reports
- Oral and practical tasks
- Final written examinations in certain subjects
Students are awarded credits at the end of each session, with a maximum of 200 credits available over the two years. This continuous assessment structure allows students to build success gradually and to be recognised for their effort, progress, and achievement throughout the programme.
Benefits of LCA
- Focuses on practical skills and learning by doing
- Includes regular work experience to support career exploration
- Develops communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills
- Encourages personal responsibility, confidence, and maturity
- Provides opportunities for further education, training, or employment after school
At St. Fergal’s College, we value the LCA programme as an important pathway for students who thrive in a more practical, hands-on learning environment. It ensures that every learner has the chance to achieve success, grow in confidence, and prepare for the next stage of their lives.
